Ray: Security is an issue that ranges from the personal situation up to global issues. How on earth is a fella supposed to keep up, to feel safe. Ignoring much of what's going on is an attractive option - if just to reduce the demands of it all. The individual can't fight these threats on every front. Personally, if I can keep muggers off my back when walking down the street - with my stun gun - and catch someone trying to break into my store - with a few surveillance cams - I think I'm doing well.

Security Alert - Can You Spot the Sex Slave?

In Michigan August 2007, a man was convicted of forcing Eastern European women into involuntary servitude to act as dancers in Detroit strip clubs.

We have all heard something about sexual slavery and naturally condemn the practice wondering where it might be taking place since we never see it. Yet, this case highlights the fact that this violation of civil rights, is happening close around us in places we either walk or drive passed, or frequent as a customer.

Many people visit strip clubs. Many have visited those Detroit strip clubs. Many people watch porn videos or DVDs, including online porn, and many folk use brothels. These are the key places women are forced to live and work as slaves. Knowing this, it is incumbent upon us to ensure we are only supporting law-abiding businesses with our patronage. How can you tell? That can be difficult but ownership history can tell you something of its stability.

Having a good reputation in the business community is a key indicator. And, of course, looking at the women involved. The hopelessness of these women tends to show through the face and body language – if only someone is prepared to see what’s there. This is not fanciful thinking, I have seen it myself. And once you have seen it, you can’t go on kidding yourself that all’s right in the world – the world right in front of you.

Security is not just something we need to ensure for ourselves. It is also something we must not deprive others of because of our selective, self-serving blindness. People’s lives are at stake.
